Description
The 12 CD set includes 10 CDs on the Gospel of John and 2 CDs on how the early Christians came to understand Jesus and how the early Christians came to understand Mary. All the talks were given at s summer conference in England. Fr. Raymond covers the main themes of John's Gospel in a wonderfully clear and easy to understand way. His deep understanding and love for this Gospel will inform, challenge and deeply touch all who listen. The two talks, one on Jesus and one on Mary, are very enlightening. The talk on Mary is the fruit of an ecumenical study on how the Gospels reflect within themselves an unfolding tradition regarding Mary. The talk on Jesus shows how the early Christians came to understand the Person of Jesus. Many who have listened to this talk have become aware of how this understanding is indeed an important refresher for us all too, nearly 2000 later ! "Heartfelt congratulations on the John tapes by Raymond E Brown. I find them really excellent. They are teaching me so much about the Gospels in general and St. John's Gospel in particular. I want to make use of some of the ideas in my next retreats."

Great help for teaching class!
You are providing a wonderful and inspiring ministry by offering these recordings, that pays dividends that you may never see, but they are there, believe me. Let me give you an example of what I mean. In my Confirmation class this year I had eight kids. Here at the Cathedral, the class is for sophomores in high school, so you can imagine what a tough crowd they can be. They never read anything, and I would assume, that's a reflection of our culture today with video games, computers, etc., etc.. So, I would give them assignments that involved doing something instead of reading. For instance, when we talked about the church; well, what does the church do? It reaches out to the sinners and the "lepers" of our society. Their assignment was to reach out to that kid at school that no one talks to and probably eats lunch by him or herself. Spend some time with them, eat lunch with them on occasion, things like that. The next week, we would talk about Christ and what He did while on this earth. One of the main things He did was heal people, by forgiving them of their sins. So their assignment that week was to forgive someone that you feel has upset you or has done something to you. Here is the point of all this, and to give you some idea of the mindset of most of the kids in my class. One girl immediately chimed in with, "OK, I'll forgive my parents for MAKING me get Confirmed". I only tell you this because during the year we covered a lot of ground. Three of the kids came into class having no idea what our Pope's name is, if that gives you any idea. We obviously had so much to cover, it became a "Cliff's Note" version of Catholicism. We had briefly touched on John's gospel in several classes and I used things I'd learned from your recordings as a main source for these touchi ng points. Towards the end of the year, which ended two weeks ago, several of the kids asked if we could do some additional classes. This was a first in all the years that any teacher, in any grade at Sacred Heart Cathedral, has ever heard of something like this; kids actually asking for more. Guess what they wanted the classes to be on? You got it, the John's Gospel. If you had never made these available, I wouldn't know enough about it to peak their interest and certainly wouldn't know enough to continue teaching them about this beautiful Gospel. So, THANK YOU!!!
